Monday, January 15, marks Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a holiday that had a rocky path to establishment. The third Monday of January was designated as a holiday in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. because he qwas a well-known civil rights leader and activist. He was also known for his strong belief in nonviolent protests. On April 8, 1968, representative John Conyers introduced legislation for a federal holiday. The next year on January 15, 1969, annual ceremonies commemorating King's birthday were launched.

Presidents' Day is an American holiday celebrated on the third Monday in Febuary. It was originally established in 1885 in recognition of President George Washington.
